We’ve shared quite a number of inspiring houses and renovations in the past. This week, we’ll walk you through the transformation of a contemporary single storey semi-D house in Selangor! The owner, a family of 5 will share with you the renovation process, including the overall concept and hiccups. So don’t scroll away if you’re looking for interior designs and renovation tips.
This Single Storey Semi-D House Gets A Contemporary Makeover:
A Malaysian couple has recently opened up their house to us and shared some amazing insights . Lila and Amir, along with their three children now reside in a single storey Semi-D at Dengkil, Selangor. The property is built on a 40×60 ft (approx 2,400 sqft) land, with a total of 5 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms.
Back in 2016, the house went through a major renovation before the family moved in. They’ve extended the kitchen area and added a room at the back for laundry area. The whole renovation took about 3 months, and they’ve faced quite a bit of hiccups in between.
Take a look at their fabulous kitchen space as example. In between renovations, they realized that their house beam is located at where they’d built their kitchen island. Since removing it will affect the house structure, the couple got creative. They’ve decided to reuse the beam as part of the design, with the frame of counter table at left, pretty unique right?

Note: It is important to get a blueprint of floorplan/ house structure from your developer before any construction works.
Another Tiny Renovation in Early 2021:
The beautiful space got a minor upgrade again earlier this year, before the lockdown. Since staying home is a norm now, it is essential for your house to get as comfortable as possible. The couple did another small renovation on their 8×6 ft bathroom to get the luxe hotel look.
Unfortunately, the renovations took two attempts. The contractor installed the marble tiles incorrectly during the first attempt. They ended up paying double to redo the whole design, and the renovation process took around 2 weeks.
Tips: This is untold but mistakes often happens during renovation, so remember to always have a Plan B and extra budget.
Many of you might be curious about the concept behind Lila and Amir’s house. The truth is, they just went with the flow, without any particular style in mind. All they want is a contemporary, easy-to-care style with comfortable space to bond with the family.
In fact, their favourite corner of the house is their patio at the garden area. There, the couple gets a breath of fresh air while watching their kids play. It’s a great space to interact with one another, they even hung a small rattan swing chair and DIY planter boxes for their greens.
Lila and Amir’s house is such an inspiration, especially for those who have a similar landed structure. The space for a family of 5 is perfect, every corner tells a certain style while still being functional. A huge shoutout to the couple for sharing us your lovely house, don’t forget to follow their IG for more before and after updates and tips!
